Classified as a historical monument, the castle of Alleuze is a major site in the Cantal. Its ruins dominate the waters of the lake of Garabit. It is mentioned since 1252 as a possession of the bishops of Clermont. Bertrand de Garlan, in the pay of the English, settled there in 1382 to terrorize the whole region. The fortress was dismantled by the Sanflorains in 1405. Today, only a central building remains, broken up, flanked by four circular towers. Its silhouette can be seen in many films, the most famous of which is La Grande vadrouille.
