On the hilly territory of the municipality, the famous aqueduct of Gier was passed. An engraved stele dating from Emperor Hadrian's reign is, by its rarity, one of the archaeological jewels of Chagnon. Recently set on the front facade of the church bell, this Roman stone was updated in 1887 by workers during the construction of the road leading to Saint-Romain-en-Jarez. In order to preserve the quality of water and the proper functioning of their works, the Roman engineers imposed strict regulation, with severe fines, by banning construction and plantations on a strip of land near the aqueduct.
