BOTH DAMS
Two dams located on two confluences of the Renaison, one of which is one of the oldest arch dams in France, waiting to be discovered.
Two dams are located on two confluences of the Renaison river supplying the communes of the West Roannais. The water is drawn from deep underground and is of roughly identical composition and relatively good quality, but it must undergo treatment and controls in a factory located at the foot of the dams. The Chartrain dam is an arch dam and is said to be one of the oldest arch dams in France. It was impounded in 1892 and covers 21 ha with a reservoir of 3,620,000 m3. It is on the edge of this dam that one of the tallest trees in France rises, a 53 m tall Douglas fir with a volume of 22 m3. Just next to it, the Rouchain dam, built in 1976, covers 39 ha with a reservoir of 6,500,000 m3 , it is a gravity dam. It is the freshest water in France and a favourite place for many walkers.
