SAINTE-MARIE CHURCH
Unique neo-Byzantine church in St. Stephen, preserving a relic of the Holy Spine of Christ's crown.
Built on the site of the ancient convent of the Visitandines built in 1622, this neo-Byzantine church, unique in its genus in Saint-Etienne, is inscribed in historical monuments. Prison then depot, it resumes its original functions at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It recalls the basilica San Marco in Venice, with its two winged bulls welcoming visitors. Two major works are placed in the chorus: The Descent of Croix (1842), painted by Theodore Chassériau and the issue of Saint Peter by the angel of Jean-Marie Faverjon, artist Stéphanois. This church preserves a relic of the Holy Thorn of the Crown of Christ.

Pleine de peintures et très lumineuse, elle inspire la sérénité.
Ses trois coupoles la rendent particulière et je l'ai vraiment préférée à la cathédrale beaucoup plus austère.
