The history of this district is linked to the silk industry, when in the 19th century Lyon was the leading working-class city in France. At that time, the Croix-Rousse became the hill that worked, as opposed to the Fourvière hill where people prayed. Croix-Rousse became part of Lyon in 1852. Today, the "village" - corresponding to the4th arrondissement - is renowned for its atmosphere and the preservation of its working-class memory thanks to the Musée des Canuts.
