FORTS DE L'ESSEILLON
In the Arc Valley, these military relics bear witness to strategic defense and are a tourist attraction.
The Esseillon buttress, overlooking the Arc valley, is a strategic defense system built in the 19th century. Commissioned by the King of Piedmont-Sardinia, it was designed to block access to the Haute-Maurienne and the Mont-Cenis pass. This military complex comprises five forts, including Fort Victor-Emmanuel and Fort Marie-Christine, designed according to Montalembert's fortification principles. After Savoie became part of France in 1860, these forts lost their military purpose and are now tourist attractions.
