CHANTERELLE DAM
Barrage de la Girotte with a view on the Mont-Blanc and a natural lake in the Beaufortain, suggesting a nice little walk.
First dam built in the Beaufortain, it is also the only one to be built on the site of a natural lake. Launched in 1949, perched at an altitude of 1,700 m, the water catchment at the Tré-la-Tête glacier, at an altitude of 1,920 m, is the first subglacial water intake project in the world. The water stored by the dam successively supplies the Belleville, Hauteluce, Beaufort, Villard, Queige, Roengers and Venthon power plants, thus used as a seasonal regulating reservoir for these seven plants. Nice little walk from Belleville to the dam, with a view of Mont-Blanc (700 m of altitude difference - duration about 2h40).
