A 12.5 kilometer long tunnel at Modane, revealed by the installation of a steam locomotive with its convoy.
Built during the first Alpine breakthrough, which took place from 1857 to 1871, this monument features a steam locomotive and its convoy, used to illustrate a permanent exhibition recounting the epic story of the digging of the very first Alpine tunnel and its repercussions. The 13-kilometer Fréjus rail tunnel was built under the supervision of the Piedmont authorities, marking the first major Alpine breakthrough of its time.
