FORT DE MONTGILBERT
A fort built between 1877 and 1882 which had the double mission of monitoring the valley and providing protection to the area.
Montgilbert Fort was built between 1877 and 1882. It could accommodate a garrison of 749 men and arm its ramparts with 11 guns and 4 mortars. Its mission was twofold: to monitor the Arc Valley from Epierre and the Hurtières plateau and to provide protection to the area. The fort is part of the Chamousset sector, which includes several fortifications to control the confluence of the Isère and Arc rivers and prevent any intrusion. For connoisseurs, it is a second generation Séré de Rivières fort with an almost triangular shape. You cannot visit the inside of the Fort, which is not allowed to enter, but you can see it from the outside, it is an imposing building. The tourist office can provide you with hiking routes in this area.
