THE ZNAMENIAN ORTHODOX MONASTERY
On the way to the depths of Cantal and its hidden treasures! From Marcenat take the direction of the waterfalls of Saillant, then the place called Le Godde, then follow the road that winds through the fir forest... The surprise is there! No small Romanesque church in dark stone but a monastery and its church with a copper-covered bulb roof. As in Russia. Indeed, this monastery houses six nuns who follow the Orthodox rite. They arrived there in 1978 and patiently built their monastery from an old barn and decorated it. You will be welcomed in the shop by a sister who will show you their artistic creations (icons, painted eggs...) or culinary creations (gingerbread, honey...). Then she will show you the church and explain both the orthodox religion, the realization of icons, but will be more discreet about her personal life. You can admire the fresco of the dome, painted by the nuns, and a beautiful collection of ancient icons. A beautiful journey across borders combining religious architecture and Russian iconography.
