NOTRE-DAME DE TAMIÉ ABBEY
An abbey, founded in 1132, known for its delicious cheese at Plancherine, a nearby visitor center at 900 m altitude.
Tamié Abbey, founded in 1132, is a veritable spiritual and gastronomic treasure nestled in the majestic Savoy countryside. Renowned for its exceptional cheese, it is home to a community of 25 monks living according to the precepts of Saint Benedict. These monks devote their lives to prayer and craftsmanship, combining tradition and know-how with a palpable passion. Although the establishment doesn't offer guided tours to preserve its spiritual ambience, visitors have the chance to buy Tamié's famous cheese on site. This tasty delight, with its creamy texture and refined taste, is made in the abbey's cheese dairy, which produces around 400 kg of cheese every day. The monks are actively involved in every stage of production, from the collection of fresh milk to the maturing process, illustrating their commitment to this traditional craft.
Visitors can purchase these delicacies just 300 metres from the monastery. For those wishing to explore further, a short hike takes them to the monastery, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding landscape. On arrival, a picnic area has been set up, ideal for enjoying a moment of relaxation while admiring the spectacular view over the Combe de Savoie. In summer, a botanical trail opens up, allowing visitors to discover the diversity of local flora. This trail provides an opportunity to learn more about endemic plants and their uses.
