SAINT-CESAIRE ABBEY
Former chapel of a Benedictine monastery founded by monks in Maurs, presenting a vestige.
This chapel of a Benedictine monastery founded in the 10th century was destroyed during the Hundred Years War. Rebuilt in the 14th century, its gothic choir, octagonal in shape, houses a group of sculptures in the round, the largest group of listed statues in the Cantal. The masterpiece of this abbey church is the reliquary bust of Saint Césaire, a masterpiece of the 12th century, in grey walnut covered with silver and gilded copper inlaid with jewels and enamel. Observe the beautiful length of the hands, symbol of the power of the word taught by the saint.
