FORT DE RONCE
A fort perched at an altitude of 2,286 m, it was once an Italian defensive fortification, with beautiful panoramic views along the way.
At the end of the 19th century, the young Italian nation set its sights on strategic control of Mont Cenis, a transalpine route of historic importance. In a climate of diplomatic tension with France, Italy undertook to fortify Mont-Cenis by building several forts. Among them, Fort de Ronce, built between 1877 and 1880, rises majestically above the pass. Designed on a circular, two-level plan, the fort incorporates the innovations of rifled artillery, reflecting the military advances of the time.
