THE MOURNING TERMIGNON
A statue in Val-Cenis, depicting a Savoyard woman in traditional costume mourning a loved one killed in the war.
This Savoyard woman in traditional costume, crying for a loved one who fell in the war, is moving. It is not only a statue, but a monument to the dead of a very unusual kind. This woman protests against the war and expresses all the pain of a mother, a wife and a sister when faced with the loss of a loved one. It is Luc Jaggi-Couvert (1887-1976), a Swiss sculptor, originally from Val-Cenis Termignon by his mother, who signs here one of the first monuments to the pacifist dead, while most highlight the patriotic virtues. The Weeping Woman was inaugurated on April 26, 1931. Since then, it has been one of the strong symbols of the village and an integral part of its historical heritage.
