BARRAGE DE TIGNES
One of the world's highest dams, with a gigantic fresco painted on top, is an integral part of the landscape.
The gigantic Chevril dam, better known as the Tignes dam, stands as a masterpiece of concrete engineering. At 181 meters high, it ranks among the highest in the world. When it was built, the inhabitants of Tignes initially resisted the idea of submerging their village under water. However, the dam was commissioned in 1953 and has blended harmoniously into the local landscape and heritage. The Hercules fresco, painted in the late 1980s by Jean-Marie Pierret, adds an epic touch.
