MARE AU PUNCH
Legendary site marking the revolt in 1849, when former slaves first took part in legislative elections.
A legendary site that bears a pretty name with regard to the events that took place there. They date back to 24 and 25 June 1849, during the first participation in the the legislative elections of the former slaves. While the population protests against the fraud attempts of the planters, dozens of newcomers are killed. Angered, they plunder, put on fire the Habitation Pirogue, then discharge in the pond nearby all the rum and sugar of the dwelling to make a gigantic punch. After three days of festivities, some of the very drunken, attack priests and nuns. We still hear during festival a song born from this sad event.
