THE BIG MOUNTAIN
La Grande Montagne, a 276-metre high peak, is reached by walking on the limestone plateau.
The inland area is a hiker's paradise: the ascent of the Grande Montagne, the island's highest point at 276 metres, is followed by a walk on the limestone plateau, with its superb panorama of the Atlantic Ocean. Its springs supply the island with drinking water. The plateau is very steep to the north, with a much gentler slope to the south. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a few agoutis (a rodent) or golden hares... Iguanas, on the other hand, run much more slowly, but blend in with the rock.
