HABITATION NÉRON
A former sugar dwelling where slaves worked, offering a guided tour by oxcart, with table d'hôte.
This 11-hectare estate is a former sugar estate dating back to the 18th century. It once covered 160 hectares, where hundreds of slaves worked. After a series of takeovers, the Néron dwelling was transformed into a distillery, and became very successful with the production of Néron rum. It even became one of the largest distilleries in Le Moule, until its closure in 1962. Only a mill, the manor house, the manager's house, a chapel and remnants of the cogs are still visible. In the 1990s, the Conseil Général acquired part of the estate, and the commune of Le Moule bought the plot where the manor house was located. The site remained undeveloped for several decades, until the Papa Rouyo distillery took over management of the estate in 2021, with the aim of creating an agricultural, craft, cultural and tourist discovery park, with an emphasis on spirit tourism. Since then, it has been possible to visit the estate following an itinerary, or to take a guided tour in an oxcart, by reservation only. The estate also boasts a table d'hôte, and a bar featuring Lékouz beers, open from Thursday to Saturday.
This site was selected, along with 17 other emblematic heritage sites, to form part of the "La Route de l'Esclave - Traces mémoires en Guadeloupe" tour, because of its link with the history of slavery, developed to provide a better understanding of this painful historical context in the archipelago.
