POINTE-A-PITRE HERITAGE DEPARTMENT
Heritage department in the municipal center offering themed tours with guide-lecturers.
Discover the history of Pointe-à-Pitre in the company of guides accredited by the Villes et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire label. The city has held this label since 2002. It is awarded by the French Ministry of Culture to local authorities that promote their heritage.
These visits are an excellent opportunity to discover the forgotten history of this city, the archipelago's historic economic capital. In this municipal center, which houses the Heritage Department, guided thematic tours of Pointe-à-Pitre are organized on a monthly basis. The program is published every month, and tours last an average of 1h30 in the company of one of the fascinating guides, the only ones authorized to show visitors the inside of historic monuments.
There are several themes to these tours, which change from year to year. Recurring themes include a stroll through the heart of the old city, a discovery of Pointe-à-Pitre's squares and explanations of the city's urban evolution since the 18th century. Alongside the squares and major monuments, you'll discover the history of the streets honoring great names in Guadeloupe's history, such as Frébault, Éboué, Gourbeyre, Schoelcher, or Saint-John Perse, who is the subject of a poetic stroll. One tour is dedicated to Creole speakers: An ka sonjé Lapwent, which means "I remember Pointe-à-Pitre". There are also 4 tours for cruise passengers and tours in English.
