FALL OF THE GALLEON
Nearly 40 m high waterfall at the foot of La Soufrière, to be discovered on a hike offering a beautiful view.
A 5 km round trip. Count on almost an hour of fairly easy descent except for the last few metres which are more delicate. The climb back up is quite arduous except for those who are used to hiking. The Galion waterfall, nearly 40 m high, is located at the foot of the soufrière at 900 m altitude.
From the Bains-Jaunes parking area, walk along the basin of the same name (beware that the parking lot is quickly saturated). At the crossroads, the path slopes gently downwards through a vegetation of mountain mangles, tree ferns, mangroves and marble trees.
After a quarter of an hour's walk, the view opens up on the right-hand side, towards the south-west and the south: suddenly, at the bend in the path, the Citerne and Echelle massifs appear from right to left, and finally the Soufrière volcano. The route then plunges into the ravine and, after a few hairpin bends, reaches the hollow of a pretty gorge. The access to the waterfall is either by the path which continues opposite, or simply by going up the bed of the Galion, which is not very difficult and allows, by climbing the rocks, to arrive in a basin at the foot of the waterfall, which is about forty meters high. The path is well marked and completely redone. The end of the trail is a bit more tricky, about 100 m long, as it is done through a passage equipped with ropes. This hike is to be avoided if you are in the company of very young children and also in rainy periods. It is imperative to get information about the weather before leaving.
