GUADELOUPE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
Guadeloupe's first Musée des Beaux-Arts opened in 2017, with the aim of introducing the local population to art and exhibiting works.
This is Guadeloupe's first fine arts museum, opened in 2017 by art collector Jérôme Filleau. Its primary vocation is totally educational: to introduce the local population to art. Through seven rooms and a passageway, the museum presents nearly 130 works (paintings, drawings and sculptures) dating from the 16th century to the present day, with an emphasis on artists who were born, practiced or have practiced on the island. A tour of the exhibition traces the evolution of art in the West Indies. You'll discover the great masters of the neoclassical period, such as Guillaume Guillon Lethière, born in Sainte-Anne (1760-1832), a commune bordering Saint-François. Some of his works can be found in the collections of the Musée du Louvre, the Musée de l'Histoire de France in Versailles, the Presidential Palace in Haiti and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. Next come 19th-century artists such as the illustrious Evremond de Bérard, a Sainte-Annais and painter of the French school (1824-1881). Contemporary Guadeloupean artists are also represented, with a beautiful space dedicated to them, featuring works on loan from fashionable painters and sculptors. This last part of the tour is sure to surprise visitors with its originality! Temporary exhibitions are organized once or twice a year. Some works are available for sale. Guided tours are available at no extra cost (minimum 5 people), subject to booking by e-mail or telephone.
