DEEP THROAT
A natural site 50 m high, set against the turquoise blue of the ocean, offering a panoramic view of La Désirade on a clear day.
Coming from Saint-Louis, go to the Vieux-Fort section; drive for 5 km and take the tuff path on the left at the end of which you will discover one of the geological sites that is among the jewels of Marie-Galante, the breathtaking Gueule Grand Gouffre, a natural site protected by the ONF.
You will be impressed by the dizzying view and the contrast caused by this 50 m high open pit, dark, which stands out against the turquoise blue of the ocean. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean come to throw themselves with a great crash against the rock in the shape of an arch of about thirty meters in circumference, dug in the rock by the swell. The phenomenon of erosion is due to the limestone nature of the island. The water spurting out and the bubbling of the sea at the bottom of the hole create a magnificent spectacle. Strong sensations and wonder guaranteed! From this point of view, you can also appreciate the panorama of the coasts of Grande-Terre, and, when the weather is good, of those of Désirade.
On the left, a small path will lead you, through an undergrowth, to another point of view, to contemplate the cliffs of the North of Marie-Galante from closer and enjoy the panoramic view.
As a precaution, be careful not to lean on the barrier, fragile in some places, which was installed to protect visitors from the crumbly limestone cliffs, and respect the signs. Stay alert, especially if you are with children. A table allows you to picnic on the spot.
