CABRIT ISLAND
Îlet that was once a fort, a penitentiary and a quarantine facility, home to iguanas and cabris, visits via trails.
After housing a fort (Joséphine), a military penitentiary was built in 1851. It was devastated by a cyclone in 1865. It then became a quarantine center: a lazaretto welcomed new immigrants from Asia until 1890, when the French general staff withdrew its garrison from Les Saintes. Today, the only inhabitants of the islet are the iguanas and cabris that thrive in the midst of the abundant cactus vegetation. There are six trails, each with an audio guide. Picnic available on site.
