It is considered the oldest church in Guadeloupe. It was built in 1636 by the Dominicans, and was initially little more than a plank shelter. In 1639, the building was considerably improved and enlarged. The church was burnt down in 1703 by the English and rebuilt by the Capuchins, who added buttresses and a porch that was classified as a historic monument in June 1975. The church was enlarged between 1952 and 1962. Eglise Saint-Joseph was listed as a historic monument in 2006 and classified in 2007.
