At the end of the square, on the seafront, it was unfortunately in a sorry state. In 1789, on the same site, the first military hospital was built in wood. It took twelve years to build it into a permanent structure, starting in 1824. In 1946, the building was named Jean-Martial, in honor of a Cayenne colonel physician who had died a year earlier in Djibouti fighting typhus. Declared a historic monument in 1992, the building is currently undergoing major renovation to become the Maison des Cultures et des Mémoires de la Guyane.
