As early as 1703, this square appeared on the Cayenne town plan, becoming the Place du Marché in 1842, where a covered market and public garden were built. In 1907, the municipal council led by Mayor Eugène Gobert decided to do away with the garden and build the current covered market. And in 1920, on the site of the former market, the monument to the First World War dead, surmounted by a rooster, was inaugurated, giving the square its current name.
