CANAL DE BEAUREGARD
One of the most famous and appreciated walks in Martinique, a perfect introduction to the northern island, its landforms and tropical vegetation. The route runs along a waterway along a 40 cm wall. Without any differences and protected from the sun by the greenery of the majestic forest, however, it is necessary to walk in single file and take care not to slip on wet plants. During the walk we see giant cheese trees, bamboo, tree ferns, tropical flowers and some crabs and cabris. The views of the surrounding mountains and on the river of Carbet below, are worth the walk alone. Also known as Slave Canal, the route recalls the slaves who, in 1777, at the risk of their lives, employed themselves to the development of a viaduct on the slope of a hill, to transport the waters of the distilleries of Saint-Pierre and Carbet. This canal is still the main water supply for many farmers and homes in the region.
