ANCIENNE ÉGLISE DU FORT
Built in the late 17th century, it replaced the town's very first church, located in the center of the cemetery, 300m to the north. Three years before the eruption of 1902, it was enlarged and brought up to date with a fine classical Baroque décor. On May 8, 1902, Ascension Day, the church was packed with worshippers at the time of the eruption. Thick fragments of walls, columns and statues scattered across the site bear witness to the volcano's destructive power. Today, only remnants of the church remain, but it's an emotional place to be.
