Overlooked by Mount Pelée, this place steeped in history recounts the incredible destiny of its incomparably flavorful rums.
With its green spaces and sea views, the Depaz distillery is a must-see stopover steeped in history. The plantation, destroyed in 1902 and rebuilt seven years later by Victor Depaz, stands apart from the town, watched over by the impressive Mount Pelée. The climate and environment give the rum a rich aroma, enhanced by a know-how whose secret has been handed down from generation to generation. A tour of the Depaz distillery takes visitors through all the stages in the production of Martinique appellation contrôlée rum, thanks to a self-guided tour with signs. A stroll through the estate's alleys leads to Château Depaz, overlooking a magnificent five-hectare park with majestic, century-old trees. After a visit to the château (for a fee), a refreshing break at the Case à Louisette will be most welcome. Named after one of Victor Depaz's first workers, the case is now run by his granddaughter, who carries on her grandmother's tradition and offers a range of homemade Péyi syrups and cakes. Next door is the rum museum. The tour ends with the boutique. Since 2019, the Depaz distillery has instigated a global project to eventually become an environmentally-friendly brand. As part of this, the distillery recently obtained ISO 14001 certification, confirming its commitment to clean manufacturing processes and to controlling the impact of its activities on the environment.
