SETTLEMENT CAVE
Grotte du Peuplement is located on the southern outskirts of Saint-Paul, opposite the Cimetière Marin. Legend has it that it served as a refuge for the 1663 arrivals, but historical studies have shown this to be false. The site was named the "grotte des premiers Français" (cave of the first Frenchmen) in the 1960s, after having been called the "caverne des Portugais" (cave of the Portuguese) or the "caverne des 12 exiles" (cave of the 12 exiles). While the cave remains inaccessible due to falling rocks, you can enjoy the pleasant, fully landscaped park, ideal for a family picnic.
