A symbol of the city of Santiago, planted at the center of a flower-filled esplanade on a hill on the outskirts of the city center, it was erected in 1944 in honor of Trujillo before being renamed to salute the soldiers who fought against the Spaniards. It is a 67-metre-high white marble structure topped by a column. The interior comprises four levels housing various museums of no real interest. From the top, there's a superb view of Santiago and the Cibao Valley.
