The airport is located in the city of El Alto, in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Located at an altitude of 4,060 meters, it is the highest international airport in the world, with a lower air bearing capacity. It was therefore necessary to build a runway of several kilometers to allow the big planes to take off. The arrival is impressive. Many cabs are waiting for you to go to La Paz (count 45 min, 50 Bs) or to the nearest cable car station ("El Alto").

The airport El Alto (La Paz) is not very big, it is easy to be found here. Its only downside (outside altitude in which it is situated (4100 m)): the distance to the centre of La Paz. By taxi, for the heavy traffic of the city, it takes at least 45 minutes to get to the centre. And the slope is important: at least 400 metres, the centre is about 3700 feet high.
