It would be a crime to visit La Paz without stopping at Paceña to try somesalteñas. These are meat and vegetable empanadas that are said to have appeared in the country when Señora Juana Manuela Gorriti, originally from Salta in Argentina, went into exile in the city of Tarija at the beginning of the 20th century. It is said that she was the first to make these small stuffed turnovers in Bolivia. Since then, the product has adopted her name, which it still bears today. Probably the bestsalteñas of res, pollo or fricasé in town.
