Celebrated in the heart of the archaeological complex, this event marks the passage to the winter solstice and celebrates the Aymara New Year.
The Aymara New Year is recently celebrated with great pomp in the archaeological site of Tiwanaku. It is a tribute to one of its main deities, Inti-Wiracocha, the Sun God. The Aymara calendar is 3,508 years longer than ours, so in 2021, the Aymaras celebrated the New Year 5,529! The ceremony begins a few minutes before sunrise in the underground temple of Tiwanaku. The moment when the first rays of the sun pass through the Puerta Del Sol, around 7am, is considered to be the right time to receive the solar energies.
