QUEEN'S BOSQUES
The highest forest in the world with the Queñua, a kind of tree without bark in specific sites of the Andes
On the slopes of the mountains surrounding the Nevado Sajama is the highest forest in the world. The Queñua (Polylepis tarapacana), is a kind of tree without bark that can reach up to 3 m high. This plant, not to be confused with quinoa, is wind-pollinated. It grows from 4,200 to 5,200 meters in very specific sites in the Andes. Half a day is enough to discover it from the village of Sajama. The hikes to the Nevado Sajama also cross the bosques on the way back.
