VOLCÁN ACOTANGO
Stratovolcano with lava flows indicating that the volcano may have been active over the last 10,000 years.
The stratovolcano Acotango (6,052 m), the highest peak of the Nevado de Quimsachata, is located on the border between Bolivia and Chile. Its north face presents lava flows indicating that the volcano could have been active during the last 10 000 years. Its access is dangerous on the Chilean side, because of the presence of antipersonnel mines, but safe on the Bolivian side. The ascent, which requires crampons and a rope, is done in one go and the departure is usually around 5 am. Bring good thermal clothing: the wind will be freezing!
