CIUDAD DE ITAS
The City of Itas, located about 20 km northeast of the village, allows to admire rock paintings
Located about 20 km north-east of the village, the Cité d'Itas, nicknamed the "city of stone", is one of the park's must-see sites. After an ascent in 4x4 (indispensable) which offers a breathtaking view, you are in the heights of the site, at about 4 000 m of altitude. It's off for a guided tour of almost 4 km, covering different parts of what is known as the City of Itas, a tangle of caves and impressive rock formations. You start with a cave that seems to have been used by very ancient civilizations (even Incas). You will be able to admire cave paintings on the rock, representing men, animals, and geometric drawings, which testify to this human presence. You continue your visit by discovering successively breathtaking landscapes before going into this labyrinth of rocky cavities all larger and deeper than each other. The viscaches play hide-and-seek with the visitors. If the sun is pointing its nose, the play of light is striking with a succession of green, red and orange colours. All these formations originate at the time when the sea bordered the area. Some cavities are reminiscent of the entrance to Gothic monuments. Majestic! On the way back, stop to admire the geological formation that makes up Torotoro's postcard: the "rocky waves", a succession of mountains with astonishing shapes and colours!
