GRUTA DE UMAJALANTA
The cave of Umajalanta, is the spillway of the river Umajalanta, waterfall in Aymara
On the road to Ciudad de Itas, you will take a junction leading you directly to the site of the Umajalanta cave. It is the deepest cave in Bolivia with a depth of 7 km. Nevertheless, only 500 meters can be covered by the visitors. The cave is in fact the spillway of the Umajalanta river, "waterfall" in Aymara. It has an entrance of 30 meters high! Once you get out of your vehicle, you drive a few meters to reach the checkpoint, do not miss the dinosaur footprints on the way. At the same place, you can rent a helmet with a headlamp. There are lockers where you can leave your fragile belongings (remember to take your padlock). Be careful: only take the bare minimum, as you will soon be embarrassed by anything superfluous during your visit. You are now ready for the visit. On the program: stalactites, stalagmites, columns and stone tree. You will pass through narrow passages where it is sometimes very difficult to move. Ropes have been installed in some difficult places so that you can climb back up safely. At the end of the visit, blind fishes are waiting for you in pockets of water created by the underground river, which implies that you will certainly cross areas where your feet will be soaked... More like caving than a simple cave visit. Be careful, this visit is not recommended for children and is reserved for non-claustrophobic sportsmen only!
