IGLESIA DE SANTA MÓNICA
This Renaissance-style church houses six magnificent paintings by Ambrosio Villaroel, as well as a few other anonymous works
This Renaissance-style church, built by the Augustinians, is one of the oldest in Sucre (1564). The interior of Santa Monica was often altered and only a rough herringbone ceiling remains of the original panelled ceiling. Its façade, considered to be the best example of Mestizo Baroque, is the most successful part of the church and, together with that of Santo Domingo, the most original in Sucre. Inside you can admire six magnificent paintings by Ambrosio Villaroel, as well as some other anonymous works.
