HOSPITAL SANTA BÁRBARA
This building, composed of three naves, is one of the rare surviving examples of Renaissance civil architecture
This building is one of the few surviving examples of Renaissance civil architecture. The hospital was founded in 1544. The building consists of three naves: the right nave had sixteen beds for Spaniards, the left nave fourteen beds for Indians, and the central nave sixteen beds for mestizos and black slaves. The imposing 17th century façade marks the transition period between the Renaissance and Baroque styles. The building had a great influence on the local architecture and was imitated many times.
