IGLESIA Y CONVENTO SAN FELIPE DE NERI
This church has beautiful neoclassical altars and paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries
The university office, which is on the opposite side of the street, will provide you with a guide (free of charge). This convent is now a school. The entrance is through a small door in calle Nicolas Ortiz, don't let the unappealing front discourage you, this is one of the most beautiful monuments in Sucre!
The church was built on the initiative of Archbishop José de San Alberto (after the construction of the church of Santa Teresa in Cochabamba) who commissioned it to the architect Pedro Nogales. San Felipe has beautiful neoclassical altars and paintings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, among which the copies made by Manuel Gumiel of the paintings of the Mengs school should be mentioned. The Mass by Le Tintico, an Indian painter from the late 17th century, is also on display. You can visit the crypt where the great figures of the nation are buried, such as Garcia Pizarro, last president of the Real Audiencia.
The cloister is magnificent, especially when seen from the roofs. Below, there is another crypt and catacombs where nuns and fathers used to have clandestine meetings. Be careful not to hit your head on the way in and out.
The most interesting part of the visit is the walk on the tiled and mosaic roofs. It will be a photographer's delight. You can even climb up one of the two bell towers! The beauty of the 360° panorama is breathtaking and you can understand why Sucre was called the Ciudad Blanca.
