PLAZA 25 DE MAYO
It is around this square that the administrative, commercial and cultural activities are organized
All of Sucre's life revolves around this square, and it is around it that the administrative, commercial and cultural activities are organized. It is also a great central point of orientation for the visitor. Surrounded by magnificent colonial buildings such as the Casa de la Libertad, the cathedral and the Palacio del Gobierno, which houses the prefecture, it is considered the largest in Bolivia. At noon and when the sun goes down, people come to walk around or simply sit on one of its benches, protected from the sun by the trees. In the center stands the statue of Marshal Sucre. A meeting point for young people and lovers, in the past, the walks around the square obeyed an unspoken code: the men walked in one direction, while the women went in the opposite direction, which allowed everyone to spot the person they were interested in or to exchange knowing glances. A man accompanying a woman had to follow the direction taken by the women. In the past, this charming custom was carefully observed, but today it is disappearing and is replaced by groups of students who meet there. The occasions of pilgrimage are numerous and regularly the place is in festival, with the regular presence of musicians, dancers... Many street food and drink sellers, in kiosks or with mobile stalls, are present on the square, it is the occasion to taste the tucumanas, delicious Bolivian empanadas.
