PARQUE CRETÁCICO
Small museum exhibiting fossils from 68 million years ago, discovered in 1994 at the Francesa site
The Cal Orcko site is the only place in the world that concentrates footprints of a wide variety of dinosaurs dating from the end of the Cretaceous period, more than 65 million years ago. Most of the Bolivian territory was at sea level and close to water points at that time. It is a very interesting visit, especially for families with children. Your guide will take you to the small museum displaying fossils from 68 million years ago, discovered in 1994 at the Francesa site, the largest Bolivian cement producer. Informative videos projected in the museum allow to understand the park in an interesting way. The visit continues with a walk through the park, where you will see 24 life-size reproductions of different known species of dinosaurs, in threatening postures. From the viewpoint, you can observe - from a distance - the centrepiece of the site, a wall 1.5 km long and 110 m high, where 462 prints of more than 150 species have been made, 8 of which have been formally identified. It should be noted that many of the prints have disappeared as a result of work carried out on the site. Twice a day, at 12 noon and 1pm, it is possible to get as close to the wall as possible to see and photograph the prints up close (under 12s are not allowed). A real trip back in time!
To get there, nothing could be easier: minibus transfers are operated from the main square near the cathedral, at 9:30 am, noon and 2:30 pm. Guided tours every 30 minutes.
