This magnificent church, located in a unique natural setting, bears witness to an era of greatness and splendor
This magnificent church is a pure concentrate of colonial art, located in a unique natural setting. The sanctuary dates back to the end of the 18th century, and bears witness to an era full of grandeur and splendor. The site was already sacred before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous peoples performed rites dedicated to their deities. The first particularity of Manquiri is an artificial platform of 400 m² that overhangs a ravine, at the foot of a mountain. The portal is of baroque style. Its three-body facade includes two towers and a central arch made of carved stone, and the surrounding wall is whitewashed all over the outside. On the arch itself, a high relief sculpture represents the sun, the moon and the Pachamama, symbolized this time by the shield of the Castilian coat of arms. Inside the sanctuary, there are paintings by Melchor Perez de Holguin and various works of the school of Cuzco. In early 2020, a mural was discovered under the renovation work of 1952.
Pilgrimage to Manquiri. In the month of May or June (mobile festival), the faithful of Potosi walk the 35 km that separate the imperial city from Manquiri. This is the month of the Señor de Manquiri, the local patron saint. This manifestation of faith brings together both new and old generations. Members of the Red Cross are stationed here and there along the route to treat the blisters of the pilgrims. At the arrival, there will be the party, always the party, the cheerful soul of a country with an unjust and sad destiny..
