Located some 20 km from Uyuni, on the road to Potosí, Pulacayo is a mining center founded in 1833 around the Huanchaca site, once the world's second-largest silver mine and still in operation today. Today, this small purple village of around 300 inhabitants has a Wild West atmosphere and seems petrified in time. On display here in the train graveyard are several 1920s locomotives and British-built wagons. The train graveyard is impressive. There's even a locomotive that was attacked... by the American bandits Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid! Like Uyuni, this is testimony to the site's industrial activity. The little village is atypical. You can also take a look at the ruins of the former home of Aniceto Arce Ruiz, Bolivia's 22nd president. You can also visit the metallurgical factory, still in operation, which contains machinery dating back over a century. You can see the metallurgists at work. The ghost-town atmosphere adds to the charm of this site.
Excursions. It's easy to plan a half-day tour from Uyuni to the village of Pulacayo; consult an agency on site for a quote. A lady in a small office at the entrance to the village welcomes visitors. Less visited than the Uyuni train cemetery, which is part of every tourist's classic itinerary, it is far more captivating and less crowded. Photographers will have a great time!
