LAS PAMPAS DEL YACUMA
Reserve with various species where you can practice activities such as boat trips on the Yacuma River, piranha fishing
When Rurrenabaque agencies talk about the pampas, they mean Las Pampas del Río Yacuma, a protected area covering 616,450 hectares. This area was declared a protected territory in 2006 and has quickly become a must-see for travelers, as it is home to numerous animal species such as the pink Amazonian dolphin(Inia geoffrensis), deer and swamp turtle (cistude), capybara (a large rodent that can weigh up to 65 kg), bush dog, anteater, jaguar, sloth, anaconda, and different species of caiman and monkeys. A wide variety of birds are present such as kingfishers, toucans, blue-throated macaws(Ara glaucogularis), herons, cormorants, eagles and the Amazonian bird of paradise. Of course, you won't encounter all of these species, but it is common to come across dolphins, caiman, bird of paradise, capybaras and monkeys along the river. The rhea and the sloth can also be seen on the road leading to the reserve. The dugout canoe ride will allow you to see more animals than in the dense, leafy forest. In addition to boat trips along the Yacuma River, you can also go on the anaconda trail in the swamps, fish for piranha, or swim with dolphins. And although the huge influx of tourists can be a bit annoying, a trip to the pampas is an adventure you should not miss!
