IGLESIA SAN FRANCISCO

This church is the last vestige of what was, in the 18th century, one of the largest convents in New Spain, the Convent of San Francisco. It was the headquarters of the first twelve Franciscan monks sent by the Pope to evangelize New Spain. The present building, erected between 1710 and 1716, is the third to have been built on this site. The two previous churches had to be demolished as they were sinking into the ground. It was here that the end of the War of Independence was celebrated with a Te Deum.
