LOS PINOS
Los Pinos was since 1934 the residence of the President of the Mexican Republic
Since 1934, Los Pinos has been the residence of the President of the Mexican Republic, the Castillo de Chapultepec, considered too representative of foreign presences, being abandoned by President Lazaro Cardenas. Amusingly, the current president Obrador has decided to give up the presidential residence, Los Pinos symbolizing in his eyes the corrupt and authoritarian political regime with which he wishes to break. This is evidenced by the looting of works of art and historical furniture carried out by his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto upon his departure... From December1, 2019, the date of the inauguration of the new president, the population went there en masse, the images recalling that of the Romanian crowd entering the Ceaucesu residence. Obrador decided to turn the former presidential residence into a cultural center, accessible to all. During the visit, you first walk along the Calzada de los Presidentes, which features bronze statues of the 14 presidents who have resided there (in a very North Korean autocratic style, it must be said). On site, two buildings are accessible to the public: the Casa Miguel Alemán and the Casa Lázaro Cárdenas. The whole of the current space houses the centres and offices related to the country's cultural administration. Having thus chosen to show humility and break with the luxurious image associated with the presidency by abandoning the sumptuous Los Pinos mansion, President Obrador has established his residence in the Palacio Nacional, in the heart of the historic centre.
