MONUMENTO A CUAUHTÉMOC
The sculpture of this important Aztec leader, whose name means "the descending eagle", was realized in the th century, when Mexican leaders began to recognize certain values of pre-Hispanic culture, particularly the discovery of large archaeological areas. This sculpture pays tribute to the force of the Aztec people, as Cuauhtémoc was the one who took the lead in the fight against the Spaniards after the death of Emperor Moctezuma. History tells us that the Spaniards burned the feet and hands of Cuauhtémoc to reveal where the gold of his people was hidden, but that he showed a great stoicism during torture.
