Designed by the architect Antonio Rivas Mercado, the Angel of Independence is the emblem of the city. The column measures 36 m. The corners of its base are occupied by statues symbolizing Law, Justice, War and Peace, as well as others representing Mexican heroes like Guerrero, Morelos, Mina and Bravo. The Angel, or Winged Victory, a 7-ton bronze sculpture covered in gold, crowns the Independence Column, which commemorates the 1810 battle for freedom.
